Synopsis
Ilse Brant has been blind since she was nine, and her hearing is the one thing the darkness gave back. She knows the building's pipes, its silences, and the exact footfall of every neighbor. So when she hears a struggle, a cry, and a body being dragged across the floor of apartment 4C, there is no doubt in her mind what happened.
The police believe 4C's tenant has been in Budapest for a month. The recording on Ilse's phone has vanished, her piano teacher thinks the stress of the competition is getting to her, and the new man in her life knows entirely too much about her routine.
Trapped inside her own apartment with a killer who is learning her patterns, Ilse has to prove a murder happened in a building that insists it didn't — before she becomes the second thing this building has erased.
An excerpt
"Two taps of a cane, the pause, the third tap. That was the concierge. A soft stride that kept its heels down: the violinist from 2B. And at half past ten, a tread Ilse had never heard before — careful, patient, the walk of someone counting doorways in the dark. She had been blind for thirty years. She was certain she was the only one in the building who could see him."
