Synopsis

Wren Calloway reads fire scenes the way others read maps — and what she reads in a torched chapel outside Redmesa makes no sense. The burn pattern is deliberate. The accelerant is a brand that was discontinued before she was born. And in the ash, someone left a hymn page with a single word in her late father's handwriting.

Two more churches burn within a month, each one older, each one tied to a place Wren lived as a child. The investigation she joined as an expert quietly becomes an interrogation, and the only person who believes her theory is the reporter who once called her a suspect.

To stop the fires, Wren must walk back into the ash of her own history — and admit that the fire she has spent her life blaming on an accident was the first in a series.

An excerpt

"Fires tell the truth the way confession does: out of order, and never the whole thing. This one had started at the altar and moved outward, kneeling its way down the pews, the way a fire only travels when someone has shown it the route. Wren had burned a thousand buildings in her mind. This one she recognized."
